Volozhin revision lists, 1816-1874

Five rows extend the documented civil chain beyond the 1811 record, followed by other family names found in the same lists. The names below preserve patronymics instead of turning a father's name into a second given name.

1816

Movsha David, son of Elia

Household 13 records Movsha David as dead in 1813. The same household lists Sroel Hirszowicz Wazbord, 22 at the 1811 count, marked as died 1826, and two other men, Faivish Mordukhovich, died 1813, and Khaim Itsko Shimshonovich Meltser, died 1815. The 1816 female list gives Movsha David's household a wife aged 23 and two daughters, 9 and 7. Their names are hard to read, so their exact readings remain open. His age is given as 31, the same as in the 1811 list, carried forward because he had died; he was born about 1780. The 1811 list records that he came to Volozhin from Wilna in 1800.

1834

Itska, son of Movsha

In Mshigan, household 79 records Itska at 24 and son Mordukh Elya at 7. Household 79 also records Itska's wife Riska, 26. Household 88 separately records David, son of Elia, 41, wife Merka and son Elya Yuda, 14. David and Movsha David are certainly different men. Both households have a boy named Elia: David's son Elya Yuda, born about 1820, and Itska's son Mordukh Elya, born about 1827. That fits two grandsons named for a grandfather Elia who had died, and it points to David and Movsha David being brothers. No other Movsha appears among the Volozhin Dubinsky households the index search returned for 1811 to 1874, so Movsha David is a candidate for Itska's father. That search missed Itska's own household under the spelling searched, so this does not show there was only one Movsha. The 1834 list gives Itska's age as 24, and as 8 at the previous revision. Open question: no single record names Itska together with Movsha David. Itska does not appear in the 1816 list, and which earlier list recorded him at age 8 is not yet known.

1874

Itska still living

The additional revision records Itska as head of household. It also records grandson Ovsei, son of Mordukh, 26, with wife Gannele, daughter of Kalman. Ovsei's age places his birth about 1848, close to Mordukh's death in 1847; whether he is this Mordukh's son is still an open question.

Other family names in the 1850 Volozhin town book

The same 1850 book of Volozhin townspeople (dated 30 October 1850) also holds these households:

  • David, son of Elia (surname written Дубинеръ, Dubiner), 41, died 1848, with son Elia, 14. These are the same father and son as household 88 in 1834 (family 132).
  • Girsh, son of Yuzel, Dubinsky, 26, with Mordukh Rudensky and his family attached to the household (family 85).
  • Eight Vaisbord households: Khaim, son of Idel, died 1847, son Shmuel, 12 (family 80); Yakhel, son of Girsh (family 83); Ovsei, son of Faib, wife Beyle, daughter of Elia, son Meer and daughter Ester (family 120); Izrel, son of Iosel, died 1841, son Yankel, 15 (family 123); Elia, son of Mikhel, died 1849, son Girsh, 9 (family 134); Idel, son of Leib, 58 (family 143); Nokhim, son of Abel, 45 (family 146); and his son Movsha, 27, wife Khasia, son Gershon and daughters Kreina and Dvaira (family 147). The book numbers show that Khaim and Yakhel came from one 1834 household, and that Nokhim and his son Movsha came from another.
  • Zelik, son of Movsha, Shapira, 35, and his son Miro, 20, living in the household of Leib Bunimovich (family 141).

Open question: Haya-Feiga Vaisbord, wife of Rav Shimon Mordechai, was the daughter of Leib Yosif Vaisbord. How he connects to these Vaisbord households is not yet known. No tie between Zelik Shapira and the Shapiro family on this site has been found.

Other family names in the 1858 Volozhin list

The 1858 list of the Volozhin Jewish society (1 April 1858; the seal on its last page names the Volozhin Jewish society) also records:

  • Three Vaisbord men who had died since the last list: Yakhel, son of Girsh, 30, died 1853, with his brother Leiba, 40 (f.291); Yudel, son of Leib, 24, died 1854 (f.303); and Yankel-Ber, son of Srul, 33, died 1857 (f.309).
  • Sheina Vaisbord, 34, with her daughter Feiga, 13 (f.285).
  • Izrael Iudel Dubinsky, 34, wife Tsirka, daughter Feyga, 11, with the Rudensky family as cousins (f.291-292).
  • A Dubine family, Don Sholom, 30, wife Bunia Sora and daughter Feyga, 1, living in the household of Srol Bunimovich (f.307-308).

Open question: a society list covers Volozhin together with its attached villages, so these families did not all necessarily live in the town itself.
